Super Bowl is this Sunday. Do you have a dog in this fight?

This is a rematch of the Super Bowl in 2008, and lots of people are tired of seeing the same teams – especially the Patriots, in the big game. This is New England’s 7th trip to the Super Bowl, and New York’s 5th trip.

Then there’s the halftime show, which features a move away from classic rock icons with Madonna this year. Will you be glued to the TV to see what she does, or is that a perfect opportunity for a beer run?

The 2011 List is out…and Hendrix reins supreme

A panel of music experts and top guitar players voted, and Jimi Hendrix comes in at #1, then followed by Clapton, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards and Jeff Beck round out the top 5.

Do you agree with the list?? Hendrix tops my personal list, so I don’t have too many complaints. Feel free to comment below…and here’s the whole list.

R.E.M. breaks up after 31 years

So, the big rock news – R.E.M. has broken up. What’s your reaction?

In my years in rock radio, I’ve noticed there’s pretty much two kinds of R.E.M. fans – complete zealots, or people who aren’t really all that into them. I’ll confess, I’ve never been a zealot. I don’t dislike the band, but never really flew the R.E.M. flag.

Now that they’ve broken up, I was surprised on how much national attention the story received. Am I wrong in thinking “What have they done recently anyway?” I hate to see any group that can stay together over 30 years disband, but does it really change the landscape of rock at this point?

I’m interested in reading your thoughts….

Among the first celebs to do the swapping? Dee Snider of Twisted Sister and House of Hair and Flavor Flav. Wow…this should be interesting.

Cheap Trick concert disaster

Cheap Trick narrowly escaped injury recently when their stage collapsed at the Ottawa Bluesfest in Canada.

The band was 20 minutes into their set and had left the stage only seconds before a massive storm blew in and caved in the stage. Three people were injured – including the band’s bus driver. All of Cheap Trick’s equipment was totaled as well.

I’ve seen people get maced and some people attended by EMTs at shows before, but nothing like this. What’s the most bizarre incident you’ve ever experienced during a concert?

It seems like album covers these days just don’t have the impact they used to.

I remember sitting around with friends and analyzing rock album covers - looking for hidden meanings while appreciating the artwork. When’s the last time you did that?

So this leads me to the question: Which rock album cover is the best and most iconic of all time? The Beatles’ “Abbey Road,” Led Zeppelin’s “1″, Nirvana’s “Nevermind”, Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”, The Stones’ “Sticky Fingers”, or maybe Springsteen’s “Born In The USA”?

Tommy Lee says Albums Obsolete

Has the concept of the album gotten tossed out along with cassettes, vinyl and the cd?

Tommy Lee of Motley Crue said in a recent interview, “To tell you the truth, I think the days of making a record…are over.” His argument is that people don’t buy whole albums anymore, only singles or EP’s.

Full albums are “a waste of time,” says the drummer, but Motley Crue has been know to feature the entire Dr. Feelgood album in its shows… So what about you – do you buy full albums anymore, or just stick to downloading singles? Would you miss the album concept if it disappeared completely?

Looks like Paul McCartney is making a cover album….

Paul McCartney To Release Covers Album Early Next Year

Paul McCartney is planning on releasing a new covers album sometime early next year. The as yet untitled album, which McCartney recorded in Los Angeles, will feature covers from the ‘pre-rock’ era. “It’s my dad’s style of music,” the former Beatle told Rolling Stone. “I’ve wanted to do that kind of thing forever, since the Beatles days. But then Rod [Stewart] went mad on it. I thought, ‘I have to wait so it doesn’t look like I’m trying to do a Rod.’”

The album will feature jazz singer Diana Krall as well as songs that McCartney himself has said he appreciates.

“They’re just songs I admire,” he continued to Rolling Stone. “I’m trying to steer away from the obvious ones. It’s get-home-from-work music. You put it on and get a glass of wine.”

My question: Is this something you want to hear and/or buy? Maybe it’s just me, but I’m never big on cover albums. It’s one thing to do one cover and put it on an album with mostly original material, but an entire album worth of covers??

Is this what happens when artists just don’t have anything original left in them to make? I mean, it’s not like Sir Paul needs the coin…he’s worth a crap ton of money already.

Has Hagar lost his mind??

Sammy claims aliens abducted him….seriously.

Years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Sammy and hanging out with him for a while before his concert in Columbia. I was left with the impression that he was a lot of fun, liked to party, very down to earth, and sane. But now, I’m scratching my head.

Sammy claimed in an interview recently that he was abducted by aliens from space, who uploaded the contents of his brain. And he added “That SH*T HAPPENED.” Uh, O Kaaaay. Awkward…..

It just so happens that Sammy’s new autobiography is coming out. Does it seem coincidental that this bizarre claim happened around the same time? Does someone have a book to sell?
