The guitar, that has been part of a heated battle between Frances Bean Cobian & Courtney Love versus Cobian’s ex Isaiah Silva since their divorce in 2016, heads to the auction block on June 19th. Along with the guitar comes the case with three baggage claim tickets, and an Alaskan Airlines sticker. plus what’s inside the case: a half-used pack of Martin guitar strings, three guitar picks, & a suede stash bag containing some tiny utensils.
The 1959 Martin D-18E was the guitar famously used by Kurt Cobian during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance on November 18, 1993, & eventually released on November 1, 1994.
Kurt Cobain’s sweater/cardigan worn during the performance went up on the auction block recently fetching $334,000.
When Cobian & Silva got married it’s alleged by Silva it was given to him as a “wedding present”. Cobain has denied that, but during their divorce settlement the guitar eventually when with Silva & he refused to ever give it back. Consequence Of Sound has detailed the battle here.
